Better mental health for every child
About 44,000 children and young people in Croatia between the ages of 10 and 19 have mental health problems
A UNICEF report found that around 44,000 children and young people aged 10 to 19 in Croatia have mental health problems. Impaired mental health caused by worries, fears, violence, family problems, as well as crisis situations such as pandemics and earthquakes, causes suffering to children and young people, disrupt education, and reduces their ability to reach their full potential.
Many children and young people are reluctant to seek help and are left to fend for themselves. The role of the school is extremely important in maintaining mental health. Teachers may be the first to notice students’ difficulties, but they are often unsure of what to do.
Therefore, it is important that teachers improve their knowledge and skills in recognizing mental health problems, providing appropriate support to students, and encouraging students to seek or accept professional help.
