Including Children with Developmental Difficulties in Primary Schooling
‘Putting a Smile on Their Faces’ is a project that targets the inclusion of children with developmental difficulties in primary schools.
Thanks to the involvement and support provided by the wider community, experts, volunteers and the media the Putting a Smile on Their Faces project gives these children the opportunity to participate in recreational, entertainment and educational activities. These activities allowed these children to gain new experiences and develop their motoric, communication and social skills as well as their creativity and independence. At the same time, the education and free time provided to parents helps them to deal better with their obligations.
The activities include a shortened daily programme, horticulture, art, music, dance and drama/performing art workshops, school plays, visits to the zoo and (in cooperation with the Mato Lovrak Primary School) sports and recreational activities in a sports hall and playground adapted to the needs of children with developmental disabilities.
The goal of the project is to ensure that all additional services and activities necessary to facilitate the integration of children with developmental difficulties into regular primary schools in the Sisak-Moslavina County are made available to these children.
In addition to the Putting a Smile on Their Faces project, Sisak-Moslavina County is also implementing a project to encourage early childhood development in the town of Dvor and the ‘Sisak Colourful Summer’ project in the Town of Sisak. This is all part of the UNICEF initiative ‘For a Better Start’.
The project ‘For a Better Start’ is part of the UNICEF programme to build the capacities of local communities to improve services for children; the programme includes a total of nine projects in the Vukovar-Srijem, Šibenik-Knin and Sisak-Moslavina counties.
The UNICEF supported ‘Putting a Smile on Their Faces’ project is implemented by the Association of People with Disabilities of the Sisak-Moslavina County. Its main partners are the towns of Petrinja and Sisak, Sisak-Moslavina County, the Croatian Cerebral Palsy Association and the Mato Lovrak Primary School in Petrinja.
